Is Cancer Hereditary?

It’s fun being me!! asked:

Ok, firstly I am not worrying about this an merely want to know…….

My great aunt on my dad’s side was diagnosed with bowel cancer which spread to her lungs and other places, she sadly 3 months later and then on my mum’s side my uncle had testicular cancer 8 years ago although overcame it and he and his wife are now expecting baby #4.

I was wondering what are the chances that I will get cancer when I grow up? (obviously I won’t get testicular cancer but could any future sons on mine?)

I don’t know of any other family cancer cases because I haven’t asked.

very few cancers are hereditary. I’d say look it up on google, look up things how to prevent cancer, and try to live healthy life. Cancer right now is uncontrollable, so just type it in online (maybe ask your doctor) and live a happy life.

    Good Luck.

I dont know. My brother has cancer, and my grama, but myself or anyone else hasnt been tested. I dont think it necessarily would run through familys. If you are worried talk to your doctor, but i think if you were in danger or they were worried they would have already carried out tests on you. I dont think theres much more of a chance of you getting cancer than anyone else. Hope ive helped

Depends rlly on what kind of cancer it is. I know breast cancer can run in a family. I am rlly not sure about colon cancer. If it does u might need ck ups when ur older to make sure everything is ok. Just make sure when u go to the doctors every time they know ur family history if your young i would not worry about that but once u start getting older is when u should start getting blood work once a year to make sure you r ok. some cancers can be hereditry. The best advice is talk to your doctor. he (or she) will always know how to help you and can always give you proper medical advice realating to that subject.

I have lost my mother 2 maternal great aunts and my father and paternal grandfather all to cancer. Yes although nearly 38 i have to go for regular breast check for breast cancer as there is a slightly higher possibility to me getting that. However my doctor told me that most oaps when they die of old age if they had an autopsy you would find either cancer or heart failure in them. Hope this helps. If really worried ask your doctor what they feel if there is a chance of cancer then they will keep an eye ion you with regular check ups and tests etc.:)
p.s ask your family about the medical history before hand as it would help. This is what is causing problems at the moment for me as I can’t give all the medical histroy going back quite away.:) :)

My father and my uncle died from cancer – of the lungs in my father’s case, of the stomach in my uncle’s. In my father’s case, it was discovered quite late and was therefore terminal – had anyone been aware three years before that it was developing, something might have been done about it. As it was, my father was 76 and it was quite advanced, and therefore terminal.

My uncle, on the other hand, was in denial for a number of years – apparently he had been told by numerous doctors that he needed to change his lifestyle, but did not want to know about this. In his case, it could have been prevented. He died in his late fifties.

Yes, you could get cancer when you’re older. The two examples above are only two cases – I have met many people who have been through cancer, been treated and survived. I met another man who had had lung cancer in his twenties, part of his lung was removed and he made a full recovery. Another man I know had leukaemia, and very nearly died, but he had a bone marrow transplant and is now in the clear.

I think the saddest case was that boy in Waterford a few weeks ago. He had just been given the all-clear for cancer and to celebrate, went to a party and took some cocaine and his poor body couldn’t handle it and he and another boy were so ill they went into comas, and if my memory serves me correctly, the former cancer patient didn’t survive taking cocaine …. can you imagine how his family had felt.

I think that cancer is the least of our worries today. So much is being spent on research and treatment.

Itis unlikely that you will get cancer but if there are lots of people in your family who have or had cancer you can go to a doctor and talk to them. They will do routine tests and stuff to make sure that is there is even a possibility they will know it. Hope this helps.
