1.What is cancer? What do ALL cancers have in common? What does cancer have to do with cell division?
2.List 5 types of cancer and give a brief explanation of each.
3.What is a tumor? Do all cancers involve tumors? Explain
4.Distinguish between benign and malignant tumors
5.What is metastasis? Why is it a problem?
6.How many Americans get cancer in their lifetime? About how many survive it?
7.What are the 3 major categories of cancer treatment? Briefly describe each.
8.Why do some cancer patients lose their hair?
9. What cells are effected by chemotherapy? Relate this to the multiple side effects of chemo.
I know this is a lot but answer what you can….you can also summarize the main ideas of these ?’s into a paragraph
Thank you to those who have answered the ? seriously…those of you who have claimed it is my hw do not realize that the reason why I’m asking these ?’s is so my adolescent daughter can understand what her grandmother is going through in simplified terms

Tsk. Tsk.
Go do your homework.

Edited to acknowledge your additional details: Why would your daughter require our answers to be typed in paragraph form?
I repeat: Go do your homework.

cancer is a disease. all cancers have a horrible painful death…i think. cancer screws up cell division.
colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, esophagal cancer, and thyroid cancer.
benign is okay. malignant is evil.
no idea what metastasis is.
#6, no idea.
i think there’s…chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. i think. too lazy to explain.
no idea why some cancer patients lose hair. something wrong with follicle cells perhaps.
And……….yea.

this will help summarize it better but….
4. malignant means contains cancer cells and benign means it doesn’t
5. when metastasis occurs it means the cancer has spread from the original point
6. I remember something like 1 in 3 will get cancer
7. Cancer can be treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy or a mixture of the both, chemotherapy is a cocktail of drugs and radiotherapy is when you treat a pinpoint area with a low level of radiation, the radiation kills all the cells in the area cancer and healthy cells.
People can also need steriod treatment and bone marrow transplants.
9. As with radiotherapy, not just cancer cells are affected, red blood cell and white blood cells are comprimised too, white blood cells are needed to fight infection so patients immune systems are pretty much none existent following chemo, some then need bone marrow transplants because they need stem cells.
The main side effects of chemo are nausea, dizziness, tendency to pick up infection, ulcers in the mouth and weight loss.

Cancer is a term for a syndrome of diseases. Cancer cells divide and don’t stop dividing. They actually form and create their own blood supply to keep themselves (the tumour) living. Malignant is cancer, benign is not.
Metastasis is when the cancer has progressed from stage one and has moved to stage 2, 3, or 4 which is pretty fargone.
Stage one is very early and often very curable depending on the type of cancer. There are so many cancers, lymphomas, sarcomas, leukemia…just do a search on “types of cancer” and you will get a huge long list.
Metastasis is a problem because it means the cancer has invaded other areas of the body, meaning it could pop up anywhere.
Patients lose their hair because the chemo drugs are so potent and toxic that they kill ALL fast growing cells, and that includes normal healthy cells too such as those which grow hair…so it falls out. It will grow back when you top chemo.
The side effects are because the good cells (like white blood cells, platelets, etc.) are killed too and this weakens your immune system, and the side effects could kill you if you are very sick and on chemo for a long time because you basically have no defenses left. That is why you should stay far away from someone who has cancer if you are sick as you could make them severely ill.
How do I know all this? My 11 year old had cancer and you kind of learn it all “baptism by fire”.

1Cancer is an abnormal growth in your bodily tissues/cells. They are all abnormal growths that can keep growing if you dont stop it. Cancer is a bad cell, that is not like the rest of your cells. They just keep dividing until they are stopped.
2 I dont know the 5 types of cancer. This was just discovered like a week ago.
3. All cancers are called tumors. Its just another word. But, the difference is, when we say tumor, we are really saying cancer. You dont say if its malignant or benign.
4. Benign tumor is one that isnt harmful. It cant kill you. Can only cause difficulties because of their size and location. A malignant tumor is a dangerous one that has to be dealt with right away.
5. Metastasis is when the cancer moves from one area of the body to another. Its a problem because then you can have 2, 3 or sometimes 4 areas of your body that has cancer growing. It becomes more difficult to take care all of them at once, let alone just one cancer. And if you cure one but not the other, you can still die. The quest is to cure your body of all cancers.
6. Alot do, but I dont know the exact numbers. How many survives? Depends on the cancer. Some cancers are easily curable, and some have a low cure rate. Pancreatic cancer is one of the worse. I believe its an average of 30% cure rate once they find out someone has pancreatic cancer.
7. Chemo therapy, radiation, and I dont know the other one.
8. Because chemotherapy and radiation destroys your body’s normal cells at the same time. And the hair is the first to go. Chemotherapy is really a poison.
9. All cells are affected by chemotherapy. When your cells are damaged, everything in your body gets weak, and then side effects of a weak person appear right away. Easily get sick, cant get rid of a cough or cold as easily, etc etc.
Everybody gets cancer one time or another in their life. Everybodys body will eventually get cancer. It just depends on if your body can take care of the cancer naturally or not. Even babies get cancer. But since their body is strong, sometimes they take care of the cancer, and nobody ever knew the baby had cancer. But when people get older, their body is weaker then before. So, eventually the cancer will get to them. Then, they have to see the doctors. Some cancers effect only women, some only men, some mostly old people, and some mostly young people. Certain leukemias only get young people between usually 27 and under. Some are only for guys like testicular cancer. For girls, cancers like cervix cancer. And other cancers effect mostly women, but some men, like breast cancer. There are alot of cures out there, you just have to find them. In the mean time, everybody us into the antioxidant thing. Its when you try to ward off cancer, or do things or eat things to keep yourself from getting cancer. Or things you dont do, like you dont eat too much red meat so that you dont become susceptible to cancer as easily later on in life. I hope this helps you…
