Understanding Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses

by Adriana Noton

The Acuvue brand of contact lenses are manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. Acuvue has patented the HYDRACLEAR technology which uses an embedded silicon wetting agent to keep the lenses moist. The Acuvue Oasys employs an upgraded version of HYDRACLEAR. Acuvue Advance lenses uses the original HYDRACLEAR technology. Some other models of Acuvue lenses are the Acuvue 2 and 1-DAY Acuvue.

All the different models of Acuvue lenses can be prescribed for near or farsightedness. The Acuvue 2 COLOURS, which has ten available colors, is used for changing or enhancing eye color. It does not correct vision.

Oasys lenses can be taken out and cleaned daily for up two weeks before replacing or you can continuously wear them for up to six nights before replacing them with a fresh pair. With the Acuvue Advance you clean them daily for two weeks and then replace them with a fresh pair of contacts. The Acuvue 2 can be worn continuously for up to six nights before replacing or you can clean them daily for two weeks before having to replace them. The 1-DAY Acuvue are worn for only 1 day and then you dispose of them and use a fresh pair.

The Oasys family of lenses provide excellent ultraviolet light protection. The Acuvue Oasys is rated at Class I UV protection with 96% UV-A and 100% UV-B radiation. The Acuvue Advance contacts also has a Class I UV rating with 93% UV-A and 99% UV-B radiation. The Acuvue 2 and the 1-Day Acuvue have Class II UV ratings with 82% UV-A and 97% UV-B radiation.

Silicone hydrogel is the main material used in making Acuvue lenses. Silicone hydrogel make your lenses feel smooth, moist and comfortable. Using senofilcon A the Oasys model allow 98% of available oxygen to be provided to the eyes. The Acuvue Advance uses a similar material called alyfilcon to allow 97% of available oxygen to be passed to your eyes. Etafilcon A is used in both The Acuvue 2 and 1-DAY Acuvue. It allows 88% of available oxygen to be passed to your eyes.

The silicone hydrogel materials used in the construction of Acuvue lenses promote a comfortable and smooth fit. Two types of lenses, the Oasys and the Acuvue Advance use a patented HYDRACLEAR technology. The Oasys actually uses a new generation of HYDRACLEAR which is called HYDRACLEAR PLUS. The PLUS version has improved the comfort level in harsh environments.

The 1-DAY Acuvue has an extra moist version named 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST that uses LACREON technology. Similar to HYDRACLEAR, LACREON uses the embedding of a wetting agent. By adding a moist cushion, which is similar to tear drops, friction is eliminated and the lenses stay very wet.

A handy feature of the Acuvue family of lenses is the ease of handling. A slight blue tint make them visible when sitting in their case. Each lens has a 1-2-3 mark for easy insertion.

Acuvue Oasys come in special versions for astigmatism and presbyopia. There is also a special version of the Acuvue Advance for astigmatism. With the variety of features, attention to detail and advance technology Acuvue contact lenses are among the best on the market.
